An online store is a special type of online business, the success of which depends largely on properly selected e-commerce software. The most important thing is a good interface design, which will make it easier for customers to find the products they are interested in. Equally important is its user-friendliness, stability and the possibility to expand its functionality with more and more new facilities. On the Polish market, three types of e-commerce applications are the most popular: WooCommerce, Presta Shop and Magento.

Let's find out what are their advantages and disadvantages and which software to choose depending on the size of your online store.

WooCommerce

WooCommerce is one of the most popular WordPress plugins for running an online store. The main advantage of this plugin is its simple and intuitive installation and low-complexity configuration of basic settings, which do not require programming knowledge. It allows you to easily manage your store from the admin panel and has a large number of free add-ons that greatly expand the functionality of the store. What's more, the plugin is completely free of charge and has a lot of community support, so you can successfully handle the expansion of the platform on your own.

On the other hand, due to the fact that WooCommerce is just a plugin and not a separate software, its capabilities are significantly limited. Many of the interesting and necessary functionalities are available only in the form of paid extensions, which requires a significant investment to make the store more personalized. These plug-ins also require frequent updates so that they can ensure the correct operation of the platform and not slow down its loading speed. In addition, the installation of more and more new add-ons puts a very heavy load on the server, so they are not a good solution for heavy traffic.

WooCommerce is recommended for people who are just starting their adventure with an online store. They are also a good solution for small and medium-sized stores. In its basic version, it doesn't need much investment, and due to its simplicity and intuitive operation, it doesn't require the help of a developer.

PrestaShop

Presta Shop is a free e-commerce platform as popular in Poland as WooCommerce. It has an intuitive management panel and a user-friendly dashboard. Its great asset is the so-called multistore, i.e. the ability to manage multiple stores from a single admin panel. It has quite a few plug-ins, both free and paid, which easily allow you to extend and modify the look and functionality of your store. It also features relatively good performance, thanks to a built-in page indexing system. Also, this platform is relatively easy to install and configure, so the users can do a good portion of the work on building the store themselves.

However, Presta Shop has a basic disadvantage regarding its flexibility. In order to fully customize its functionalities, you need to invest in paid plug-ins, which can be used for free on other platforms. This means that the expansion and further development of the store can be not only problematic, but also expensive, and equipping it with custom solutions is very difficult. Additionally, if the number of products grows rapidly, there can be serious problems with store performance.

Presta Shop is recommended for small and medium-sized stores that are just starting out or already have some experience in running an e-commerce business, and have a limited number of products. In its basic version, it does not require a lot of money, but you should expect to have to pay for it during expansion and use the services of a developer.

Magento

Magento is an open source e-commerce software that offers an extremely extensive arsenal of add-ons to extend the platform's functionality. Its innovation lies in its heavy focus on multi-channel sales, the so-called omnichannel, which is based on thinking of all sales channels and individual media as a single, complementary whole. The platform allows you to administer a huge inventory of products or several stores at once. Its great advantage is exceptional flexibility and scalability useful when the store grows. What's more, it has an extensive reporting and analysis system and is tailored for SEO and SEM related activities.

However, Magento is a more technologically complex e-commerce solution, which means that you will need specialized knowledge or the help of a developer to manage it. Moreover, in order for a store set up on this platform to work properly and smoothly, it requires the purchase of paid add-ons, which entails further financial outlays. It is not as intuitive as WooCommerce, so creating a store is quite demanding.

Magento is recommended in particular for medium and large stores that have a generous wallet and a pretty good awareness of the market requirements for the management and functionality of online stores. This type of e-commerce is already very well known in Western Europe and the USA, but also in Poland I am gaining more and more supporters among large companies and demanding warehouses and wholesalers.
